Benicar and Severe Intestinal Problems
Olmesartan medoxomil, a prescription blood pressure medication marketed as Benicar®, Benicar HCT®, Azor®, or Tribenzor®, may be causing you or your loved one to suffer from severe intestinal problems. In July of 2013 the FDA issued a Safety Announcement warning that the drug can cause intestinal problems known as sprue-like enteropathy.1 Symptoms include chronic diarrhea, weight loss, nausea and vomiting.2 These symptoms can be so severe that they require hospitalization.3 Because there is often a significant period of time (months or years) between beginning olmesartan medoxomil (hereinafter “Benicar”) and developing these symptoms, doctors and patients often don’t consider Benicar as a potential cause.4 However, a Mayo Clinic study found a possible association between the drug and sprue-like enteropathy, and further found that when removed from the drug, all of the patients’ symptoms decreased, and/or resolved completely.5
At Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P., we investigate potential claims on behalf of patients who were prescribed Benicar and developed these severe intestinal problems, to see if they may have a claim against the manufacturers of Benicar. Our on-staff medical advisors are available to answer your questions and listen to your concerns as you determine what to do next. If you think you or a loved one has been injured by Benicar, we are interested in hearing what you have to say.
